How To Crochet In Joined / Joining Rounds With Single Crochet

Dear all,
If you are crocheting in rounds, there are 2 ways.

- Working in continuous / spiral rounds and
- Working in joined / joining rounds.
This tutorial is about working in joined / joining rounds. I will also show you how to crochet a slip stitch and how to make a single crochet in a single crochet (sc) stitch.
Let's start crocheting together. :)

sc : single crochet
sl st : slip stitch
ch : chain

1. We crochet our first round by making the magic ring.

While working in joined rounds with sc, we end every round with a slip stitch (sl st), but unfortunately these slip stitches form a horizontal seam.
And we always begin the new round with ch 1, which is called the raising chain. By this chain, beginning of the rounds are at the same level as the end of the rounds. Remember that, raising ch 1 is never counted as a stitch in the patterns while working in sc.

Joined / Joining Rounds

There are different methods for working in joined rounds with sc.
In this tutorial we will have a look at the most common 2 methods:
- Joining to the first sc.
- Joining to the raising chain.

Joining to the first sc is the easier way, but it forms a more noticeable seam.

In both methods, we end the 1st round and begin the 2nd round in the same way. So first, let’s crochet our 2nd round.

2. Insert your hook into the first single crochet stitch of the 1st round.
(The top of a single crochet stitch, looks like a braid which is formed by "V" shaped loops. You go underneath the both loops of the braid.)

3. Yarn over from back.

4. Pull the yarn through the loops of the stitch, and the loop on the hook in one movement. Here is the slip stitch. :) And with the slip stitch we finish our 1st round.

5. We begin the 2nd round with ch 1 (raising chain).  (Yarn over from back, and pull through the loop on the hook.)

And we make the 1st single crochet (sc) of the 2nd round in the same stitch as the joining slip stitch (sl st).
6. Insert your hook into the first sc stitch of the 1st round again. (You go underneath the both loops of the braid.)

7. Yarn over from back and pull the yarn through the stitch. Now you have 2 loops on your hook.

8. Yarn over from back again, and pull the yarn through the both loops on your hook. And here is your single crochet. :)

According to the pattern, if 2nd round starts with increase, it means to make sl st and 2 sc in the same stitch.
Continue crocheting till the end of the 2nd round.

Now let's have a look at the 2 different methods.

Joined Rounds / Method 1: Joining to the first sc

METHOD 1 : JOINING TO THE FIRST SC

1. At the end of every round, we see the sl st of the previous round and the raising chain of current round.
In this method, we skip both the slip stitch of the previous round and the raising chain, and make our joining sl st in the first sc of the current round.

2. At the beginning of the next round, we make a raising chain (ch 1).

3. And we make the first sc in the same stitch as the sl st join.

How To Decrease One Single Crochet ( Invisible Decrease )

How To Decrease One Single Crochet ( Invisible Decrease ) While crocheting, you need to change the number of the stitches in order to give your project the proper shape. This tutorial is about decreasing the number of stitches. To decrease one single crochet (sc), we join two single crochet stitches together and make them become one stitch. By this way you will have 1 stitch, instead of 2 stitches.  There are two ways for decreasing one single crochet. - Normal / Regular Decrease   - Invisible Decrease In this tutorial I am going to show you the invisible decrease method which I use in all my amigurumi projects. With this method, "decreased stitches" are nearly unnoticeable and the surface of the finished project looks smoother. Let's make "one single crochet decrease" together. :) If you prefer a video tutorial, please  click here. How To Crochet In Continuous / Joining Rounds With Single Crochet  Dear all, If you are crocheting in rounds, there are 2 ways. - Working in continuous / spiral rounds and - Working in joined / joining rounds. This tutorial is about working in continuous / spiral rounds. I will also show you how to make a single crochet in a single crochet (sc) stitch. While working in continuous / spiral rounds, we keep crocheting round and round continuously. We don't join the end and the beginning of the rounds. So while working in spiral rounds, it is important to use a marker to identify where each round ends and begins. Let's start crocheting together. :) If you prefer a video tutorial, please click here.
