How To Crochet in "Back Loop Only (BLO)" and "Front Loop Only (FLO)"

Dear All,

In this tutorial, let's see how to work in BLO & FLO :)

Abbreviations:

sc : single crochet
st(s) : stitch (es)
flo : front loop only
blo : back loop only

The top of a single crochet stitch, looks like a braid which is formed by "V" shaped loops.
The front loop is the one which is closer to you. And the back loop is the farther one.
(If you are working in rows, no matter which side you turn; while crocheting, the front loop is always the one that is closer to you and the back loop is always the one that is farther away from you.)

HOW TO CROCHET IN THE "BACK LOOP ONLY (BLO)"

"Crocheting in the back loop only" means, we insert our hook underneath only the back loop of the stitch we are crocheting into.
Let's work in BLO and make a single crochet stitch together.

1. The top of a single crochet stitch, looks like a braid which is formed by "V" shaped loops. Insert your hook underneath only the back loop of the braid.

2. Yarn over from back and pull the yarn through the stitch. Now you have 2 loops on your hook.

3. Yarn over from back again, and pull the yarn through the both loops on your hook.

I also prepared another photo tutorial by using different colors to make it easier to see "how to crochet in the back loop only"

HOW TO CROCHET IN THE "FRONT LOOP ONLY (FLO)"

"Crocheting in the front loop only" means, we insert our hook underneath only the front loop of the stitch we are crocheting into.
Now let's work in FLO and make a single crochet stitch together.

You need to use "BLO"  or/and "FLO" techniques to change the texture, shape or to add layers to some of your projects. For example, I frequently use these two techniques for the borders of the clothes of my amigurumi dolls. :)

While crocheting the border round, first I work in the back loops only. Then I crochet the same round again with the front loops only technique.
And here are some examples :)
